Made on 27 Sep 2026, at M1. Scenes tagged concept show the design of milestones 2 to 7 at that time. M2 to M5 have been built since and differ in places (the project README shows the real commands); M6 and M7 are not built. Where things stand now: MILESTONES.md.

SmartConfig · three short films

How SmartConfig gets built, how it will work, and life without it

Pick a film. Each one is narrated (your browser reads the captions aloud), has sound effects, chapters and a fullscreen mode. Tags say what is real and what is a mock-up of software that isn't built yet.

What is realMilestone 1 scenes use the real output of sc recorded on this VM. The boot failure is based on running systemd's own fstab generator against the broken file on this VM: the /data mount requires the missing disk, so boot waits 90 s and stops. The root account on this VM is locked, as on every default Ubuntu install.
What is a mock-upEverything tagged concept shows milestones 2 to 7 as they were designed when the films were made (27 Sep 2026): the watcher, checkers, rescue boot entry, package and sc why. M2 to M5 are built since and differ in places; M6 and M7 are not built yet.
About the clockThe downtime counter in "Without SmartConfig" is illustrative: how long it typically takes someone at the machine to find the cause from Ubuntu's emergency shell, which opens without a root password but says nothing about what changed. Over SSH, someone has to go to the machine.
